The 5 Food Groups

Thanks for all the great feedback on my last post! I’m thinking about having something similar every Wednesday. Maybe a workout Wednesday series? Hmmmmm…..something to think about….

But, today I wanted to talk about the 5 food groups in our house. These are not the regulated FDA food groups, trust me.

  • Cereal – we should seriously buy stock in Kashi cereal – we eat a TON of it!
  • Bread – does bread not make the world go round??
  • Protein smoothies – I’ve been on a chocolate/banana/pb kick lately (it used to be strawberry/banana)!
  • Roasted veggies – cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, squash, you name it – we LOVE it

And last, and most important……………….ICE CREAM!!!

Yes, I have designated ice cream as our #1 food group. I’m not ashamed. We only live once, people.

We all have our favorite: C likes his on a cone, J likes his in a giant bowl with not too many toppings, and I like mine in a small bowl with peanuts and chocolate sauce on top.

Ice cream is so prominent in our lives that last summer I had to instate a rule that if the boys wanted ice cream then we had to either walk or ride our bikes there, no driving (sadly, that rule didn’t last, but I tried!). This summer the rule is going to be in FULL EFFECT. And I say this because, there’s a new sweet spot in town!!

This new throw back ice cream/candy parlor is opening close enough to our house that I foresee this being a HUGE problem this summer. Heck, it’s going to be a problem as soon as they open this Saturday!

Lucky me, my BBF (best blogger friend), Allison, knows my love of sweets and invited me as her “plus one” to a special media preview of this fantastic shop last Saturday.

The inside is darling and decorated with that old school, 1950′s, classy ice cream parlor:

There are options for everyone!

On the right are pb sandwiches (bacon, marshmallow, nutella, or jelly)! O.M.G.

But my eye was on the ice cream.

Unfortunately I had my invisalign in so I didn’t partake in any of the ice cream tasting, but don’t you worry, you will be seeing plenty of this place in the next few months. There’s even a “Terminal Tower” on the menu (10 scoops!), so maybe it’s time for a new challenge when Mandy comes home?? :)

What’s the #1 food group in your house?? Please tell me we’re not the only ones where sweets reign supreme!!

Mine would be chocolate… I’m right there with ya girl! :)

But I do really like your rule about having to “move” to get ice cream… I TRY to be like that with sweets after dinner… (only if I worked out that day!)

Ow! What a cool spot! I love when new restaurants open!!! #1 food group…hmmmm probably just baked goods in general. I make bars every week that Josh eats for breakfast at least half of the week …and the cookies never stop flowing.

Carbohydrates….anything carby: sweet potatoes, BREAD (I’m with you – it DOES make the world go round), fruits (that’s a MUST, MUST, MUST in our house), and veggies. So all sorts of carbs from low glycemic to high. We love ‘em.

Milk and pickles are a staple in my house. We go through at least 3 gallons of milk a week and buy the giant pickles from Costco.
ANd I like the workout Wednesday idea!

Ice cream does deserve to be it’s own group. It does have calcium, can have fruit and protein (nuts) too. And if there is dark chocolate you get antioxidants :)

That looks like trouble! Oatmeal is a huge food group here! I think I am the champion here with it though. Ice cream used to be, but we have backed off a lot. The boys are asking for it more and more, so I think that may be changing! I love your food groups…cereal is pretty high up there for us too!

I’m jealous of all you guys that got to go to Sweet Moses :( Ice cream is super high on my list – therefore I don’t buy it! I keep it for a treat when I go out, or go to my parents house because they always have some. The top food groups in the household are: peanut butter, bread, chicken, veggies. Miss you :)

I think cheese is our favorite food group in this house!

  10. March 25th, 2011 at 17:14 | #10

mmm – nothing better than cute little shops where they have free samples!

  11. March 26th, 2011 at 21:24 | #11

I saw this on Allison’s blog – lucky! The ice cream place by my Mom’s house has a signature dish – “The Trough” – it has like 12 scoops of ice cream AND toppings – if your group of 4 can eat it in an hour – its free, otherwise its like $40!

  12. March 27th, 2011 at 01:24 | #12

And you rag on me for eating Girl Scout cookies????

At the moment, the predominant food groups in my house are: apples, bananas, noodles and Wendy’s apple pecan salad with chili. So I guess apples appear twice…

  13. March 27th, 2011 at 15:41 | #13

That should be apple pecan CHICKEN salad.

You know I am just giving you a hard time. :)

Well, it’s only me in my apt. so my food groups are peanut butter, oatmeal, veggies, fruit, and ICE CREAM! Let’s just say I have more ice cream in my freezer than all of my other “food groups” combined. A day without it is sad.

  15. March 28th, 2011 at 16:14 | #15

Sweets totally rule our domain! Second would come bread products solely b/c of me haha.

  16. March 28th, 2011 at 16:52 | #16

I saw Allison’s post on this place and it really looks awesome. Our #1 food group is cereal. We have sooo much of it!

  17. March 28th, 2011 at 17:30 | #17

We have 2 main groups at our house cause we are so different. Mike is SWEETS (ice cream, cookies, chocolate) and mine is SALTY (I keep a stash of chex mix or pringles in my office).

  18. March 28th, 2011 at 20:07 | #18

I read in the paper that there is a chocolate place in Columbus that has 40 different varieties. I’d be in heaven.

  19. March 28th, 2011 at 21:01 | #19

Chocolate for sure is a staple at our house. Usually dark chocolate. Next to that would be bread. It really does make the heart go round!

  20. March 28th, 2011 at 21:23 | #20

Mine would have to be vegemite on toast! I am addicted at the moment :)
