A New Year
So I didn’t really want to do a “resolutions” or “goals” post, because I’m sure you have read 80 million of those lately. But there are 3 things worth mentioning this year:
1. As a family we’ve decided to spend at least 3 nights a week eating dinner at the dinner table. We’ve gotten into a bad habit of eating on tv trays in the living room as we catch up on our favorite shows (Glee, Cake Challenge, etc). And we’re so damn busy that some nights we all eat separately and eat different things!
The best way for me to tackle this little goal was to download a meal planning app (MealBoard).

It’s pretty awesome – I entered the recipes I wanted to make this week, hit “sync”, and it created my grocery list. And as I checked off the items while at the grocery store, they were automatically removed from the list. Easy Peasy. I normally just wing it!
Btw, I have tried a million times to replicate Deagan’s shrimp tacos (we all LOVE them!), but they’re never the same. They’re delicious, but not the same. Anyone have any insider information on that recipe?? For real, I’m not joking.
2. This is the year of triathlons for me. I still love running, and have a few running goals this year, but I need a change. I need something to challenge me, and since it scares the crap out of me every time I think about it, I think this is it.
3. FIND PEACE. Not world peace (that would be lovely, though!), but peace within myself.

I want to find an inner peace, one that accepts me for me, one that loves me for who I am, and one that is confident to just be me. You would think that since I’m 35 (crap, crap, crap), I would have found this already, but nope. Not yet.
I really thought 2011 was going to be MY YEAR, but maybe 2012 is. I have a good feeling about this year.
Two questions:
- Do you meal plan??
- Seriously, do you have Deagan’s special shrimp taco secret that makes them so incredibly delicious?????

I’m downloading this app ASAP! I use a dry erase board and meal plan each week for Mike and I but I love that the app will create my grocery list… AWESOME!
I’m with you. I think 2011 was a year of transitions for me. It was setting me up for how good this next year will be. Hopefully… lol
Happy New Year, Heather!
those shrimp tacos are THE BOMB. i’ll see if i can shake it out of Deagan next time i’m in there
Great goals! Eating as a family was super important to my mom! Now its important to me! I think you will rock 2012!
i definitely use a meal plan as an outline and then shuffle days here and there as needed. might have to check out that app!
I love this! Your focus on more quality time with family *plus* more quality time with YOU to truly find that inner peace you’re looking for? Awesome. 2012 is gonna be a fabulous year for you, I totally sense that too!
Eating together at the dinner table is huge for me as well. We sit, we eat, we catch up on the day. It makes a huge difference! I am also for some semblance of peace and balance in my mind this year too…with you there as well! That meal app sounds awesome btw!
Seriously a meal app? I so need this! Fantastic. Your eating together goal is a noble one. We need to do that as well. Mmmm shrimp tacos sound so good.
Here’s to peace girl! Trust me there is nothing crappy about 35. That was kind of the beginning of the wonderful years for me. Xo
We should totally plan on a tri together with J and Christina. Can we do a sprint to start?
I’m not sure if you practice yoga… but I really got into it a couple months ago and it has really helped me realize a lot of things about myself. I really like the work out along with what the yogi’s say during class… if you haven’t tried it, I would recommend Tammy, Jenn or Lanie’s Hot Powerful Flow classes at Inner Bliss. Might be something helpful for your inner peace.
2012 is going to be a great year!
Website includes “avocado, corn, white cheddar, micro cilantro” in the ingredients, but I think it may be the sauce that they put on top of it. From my OBA October recap, the sauce is sort of orange-ish like a mango. There’s definitely also a Mexican white cheese on them, probably oaxaca. I’m about to email Deagan for the inside scoop…
what isn’t awesome at deagan’s??
umm i don’t meal plan, ever. unless buying some chicken on sunday and and planning to bake one little breast each night is a plan. it is a boring one and usually leads to me eating pizza or ordering take out sushi. not having a legit meal plan is definitely the reason that i waste so much money on food!
That app looks awesome! i definitely need that. Otherwise I will just order take out each night…
Good luck on your TRI plans this year. Sounds exciting!
Meal planning has so many benefits-sadly I’ve really gotten away from it! That and sitting down to dinner every night. Its been sporadic at best. Those Table Topic cards I got really make it fun & something the kids look forward to. Good luck with all of your goals!
I’m not much of a meal planner. I rarely do big grocery shopping trips because it’s such a pain to find parking near our condo…but we do a lot of dinners (about 5 per week) at the dinner table together. My rule is – if I make it, we sit at the dinner table.
I’m with you on the quest for self peace…I’m looking forward to seeing the people we are at the end of the journey
Time to be our own best friends!
Oh the last one speaks to me! This past year has been all about me finding me. I have struggled my whole life with making others happy and even when Tony tried to give me the space to do my thing, I still froze up. This year was not easy on me in a lot of ways. Making decisions for me made a lot of people not like me for standing up for me. I am finally finding that inner peace and I will be 37 in a week and a half. I feel like this is my time to shine and accepting myself was the first big step. I always feel like I need to be perfect and guess what? I’m not. I know, shocker. I’m completely ok with that though. Studying and finding what truly makes me happy has really felt good. I wish you tons of luck with it too! I have found my smile again and that feels amazing.
As for dinner together…I find that making a point to do that a couple of days a week is nice, but even if we can’t find the time to coordinate schedules for that, there is always treat time! The kids are so hungry when they get home and since I work late a couple nights a week the actually dinner meal together is hard. Your meal planning sounds perfect! Love that app!
I meal plan, but I have been horrible at following it lately due to the illness that swept through our house in December. Time to get back at it!
I am really bad at meal planning as often it is just me. It is something I want to add. Good luck with tris!
