Landlord Woes

Man, for someone who claims that her blog is all about balance sure needs some help right now. Life is just plain cray-cray. In addition to everything else, I’ve started triathlon training (more on that to come) and I’m in the process of fixing up my condo.

Remember when I told you guys that I was a landlord? Well, my renters of 5 years finally decided to buy their own house and leave me hanging (I kid, I kid, I knew they were going to be moving soon). My new renters are moving in on June 15th and there is SO MUCH to be done before they move in. Like overwhelmingly so.

  1. Paint the living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom closets, and all trim – done!
  2. Replace hot water tank (ugh) – done!
  3. Replace kitchen cabinets – HUGE project
  4. Install new closet organizers
  5. Install new ceiling fan in one of the bedrooms – done!
  6. Call an electrician to come fix the dining room ceiling fan that is sinking(!)
  7. Replace bathtub towel racks
  8. Replace all lightbulbs
  9. Order new bay window ($$$) – done!
  10. Replace screen in master bedroom window
  11. Schedule cleaners (got a Living Social deal!) – done!
  12. Landscape the patio area
  13. Transport our refrigerator and stove to condo (we’re getting new ones – yay!
  14. Get rid of old stove (fridge is already gone)

All before June 15th. And this is all in addition to work, C’s baseball games, my training, blogging (or lack there of), teaching at the gym, J’s soccer games, and C’s end-of-school-year activities.

Talk about a panic attack.

But I can at least say that progress is being made.

Hello, old as dirt, ugly cabinets – so sad to see you go.

Ahhhhhh!! I’m in LOVE with the paint job! And I’m sure that once the new cabinets are installed the kitchen is going to look amazing, too. Nothing a little paint and love can’t fix.

Luckily I have my parents, who I pay nothing, which is basically slave labor, helping me and J. And, luckily, they’re happy to do it. ;)

Btw, you’d be surprised what people leave behind after living somewhere for 5 years (leopard print undies????). Good thing the cleaners have been scheduled……..

Anyone else out there have to deal with renters, or landlords? Any good stories???

I had no idea! I wish you were my landlord… the one I have is currently a super awkward individual. And I don’t think he gets my humor. Which makes it worse… whomp whomp.

Funny that I just wrote a blog post tonight about there not being enough hours in the day! For different reasons, but I definitely feel your pain! I LOVE lists and you’re checking off lots of items! Everything looks so great and you’ll get it all done, I’m sure! Good luck!

Wow, you are even more incredible than I already thought you were before I knew you were a landlord on top of everything else you juggle. I wouldn’t even know where to BEGIN as a landlord, wowza!

We considered renting out our place at one point last summer when we were in TN, but my heart was breaking thinking about what people would do to our home. You sound like a great landlord though. Dang, the people that are moving in are moving into a great place!

Oh man. It’s hard enough doing housework on your own home let alone a rental! I guess I never thought about that honestly.

  8. May 31st, 2012 at 08:36 | #8

you would be the best landlord ever!

  9. May 31st, 2012 at 10:11 | #9

Damn, I didn’t know you were a landlord!! No wonder you are CRAZY busy and even busier than I thought!! My grandparents used to be landlords and we used to help them clean out apartments after they were empty, for extra summer cash. Stuff left behind was ridic, and left so gross too! I can imagine it is a LOT OF WORK!!!!!

Hang in there!! I would be going nuts!! I used to be in property management and I have seen some scary shit! LOL!

We were thinking about turning our spot into a rental once we move out… i know it’s an ordeal but can be the only solution sometimes. Great post and it looks great!

I love that paint color (the brown one) alot btw!! We have something similar in our kitchen and I love it. We were thinking of getting into the rental house stuff but don’t think we can manage all that work! You are doing a great job!

Oh my oh my!! We just became homeowners/landlords this past week- I’ve been too busy to even post about it yet! But the uncharted territory of both of these new endeavors is SCARY! Aside from wanting to fix up our new unit, we have a family of tenants to take care of too. It looks like you are a great landlord though- hopefully we will be just as good. Also- I LOVE the paint colors! I can’t wait to get down and dirty and paint!

Sometime Kimi and I will have to divulge to you the stories of the house we lived in together in college. Oh man, those landlords were a TRIP!
