Working Towards My Happy Weight

It’s no secret that I’ve put on a few pounds over the past 2 years (cringe). It started when I was sidelined due to my IT band injury, and continued when I sprained my ankle (right after I finally got control of my IT band issues!) – resulting in me being out of commission for quite awhile.

I could get into the other reasons that that contributed to this, too, but, ultimately, they don’t really matter – all that matters is that my jeans don’t fit like they used to.

At my happy weight. (with long hair!) (and before I learned to bake everything from scratch :) )

It’s not an easy topic for me, considering it took me so long to LOSE the weight 5 years ago. Also, it can be embarrassing since everyone knows me as the “fitness fanatic”.

But it’s not the exercise that is the problem for me. It’s the food.

It’s pretty simple: I like to eat.

And I especially like to bake for my friends and family.

C’s soccer team!

But, when I bake, I eat. It’s a bad bad habit.

So I’m eliminating the baking from my life for a few months (sorry, boys!). If we have special occasions that require baked goods, then I’ll buy them from the local bakery. Simple solution.

Eliminating baking isn’t going to solve all my problems, but it’s one step in the right direction. I’m also logging my food religiously on My Fitness Pal. Boring, but necessary. Especially on the weekends because that’s when all hell breaks loose. Weekends are my biggest struggle.

But I’m down 9 lbs since January 2nd, only 15 more to go! I’ll check in again at the end of February. Hopefully with good news. I figure if I put it out on the internet I have to stay accountable. :)

What’s your food kryptonite (the one food you can’t ever turn down)? Mine is cake and ice cream. Hands down.

Any baked good (cake, cupcakes, muffins….) and pretzels with Nutella. I’m an eating machine! I pretty much have a hard time turning down ANYTHING! (Pork belly, bacon, pasta……) ugh. Hang in there!! You can do it, you are amazing and dedicated!! :-)

I respect your honesty. I think you look awesome and fit. But I definitely understand where you’re coming from. I’ve gained some weight since this blood clot thing and am struggling to get it off. It’s not a lot, but enough. Congrats on the 9 lbs though. That’s quite a bit in a month. My kryptonite is wine. I’m not a sweet treat gal, but I adore a glass of pinot noir or grigio. Oh and pizza on the weekend. Ok so wine and pizza….

I agree with Heather! I think you look fantastic :) . But I think we all need to work to our happy place. I finally kicked that last little bit o baby weight…and it definitely required I stop baking as much. Kryptonite? Tortilla chips, pretzels, and I can eat amazing amounts of fruit….

because it’s just me, I don’t keep anything bad in the house. except sugar that I put in my tea. It works for be but I’m the same way – I eat whatever I want and these last 10 are taking FOREVER to come off.

I too think it is HARD to talk about weight, especially when it comes to being in an industry where you, as you say, are known as being a fitness fanatic – and you ARE, and you ARE fit and fabulous, but I also know that we know our bodies best and when we don’t feel our best or know there are a few lurking lbs somewhere, we know, and that’s what matters. Not anyone else’s opinion. Even though I agree that you look fabulous, as you always have! and 9 lbs? seriously awesome!! you will be ‘there’ in no time!! :)

Sometimes it’s hard for people to understand why I struggle with my weight and run marathons. People think since I run, I should be super thin. But I do have an issue with food. Baked goods included. But I generally struggle with all foods. Thanks for sharing this. I felt like I was reading about myself.

Baking is definitely my downfall, too. I love to sample… over and over. So I go on baking hiatus, too. Or only bake once a month. It helps. For sure.

i’ve put on 10lbs since september and i’m having the hardest time getting rid of it. i am counting calories religously starting this week. sweets aren’t really my problem. i would say its the non-routineness of the weekends. i just do and eat whatever, especially if i get a long run or hard work in. i feel like i am cancelling it out, but apparently thats not the case. keep up the good work!!!

I love My Fitness Pal. I started logging in when I had my IT band problems. It was hard to know how much I could eat or not eat when I wasn’t running 50-60 miles a week. Actually I wasn’t able to run at all for a while.
Baking is downfall for me but I’ve cut it out for the most part. I bake here and there but not anywhere near as much as I used to. I splurge on certain occasions, Super bowl, 20 milers etc.
I always thought I couldn’t live without cereal. This year I’ve been really good at cutting it out. I buy 1 box a month (instead of 4-5 a week). Last month I had 2 bowls of cereal total. I’ve replaced cereal with fresh fruits and avocados. We have Blue Sky Green Fields deliver once a week at work so I get fresh foods once a week from them (and I get to pick what I get, it’s not random stuff I wouldn’t eat)

It’s a tough balance for sure. I love to bake too and I do find the problem with baking is it yields so much and I hate throwing things out. I think to cut it out for a bit is definitely a step in the right direction! Injuries definitely don’t help either. Down 9 is awesome- keep it up!

So my comment will sound a lot like my sisters — we share a brain, what can I say? But seriously, huge kudos for 1) talking openly about it and 2) for already knocking off NINE lbs, that’s huge!! I have to say, when I started logging my food and figured out what my ideal ‘number’ was calorically, it was like magic. Suddenly, it all made sense, my body started to change the way I’d worked so hard for it to change and I was happier and more balanced — no more blowing it out of the water (like WHOA) every single weekend, but much more consistency between the weekday and weekend in terms of how I was approaching my eats daily. That’s not to say I’m perfect on weekends, but I’m far better than before — and happier because of it. NOT deprived — I still drink wine and eat chocolate! — I just balance the treats better than I used to. You got this friend (and are beautiful no matter what, just sayin…)

I’m actually the same. I love to bake. Hate to cook, but love to bake. I used to always be the one to bring baked goods and desserts to social events because I always had a new recipe I wanted to try. In the past few months, when I faced some new struggles I found myself baking more and always overeating because of emotional eating. I would eat while baking then eat any remaining goodies. I knew it was putting me back on a slippery slope so baking has been gone for me too for now.

J and C must be pissed!!!! i can never say to to carbs. and chicken wings ;)

You always look like the image of fitness. I’m suprised you think you need to lose. Just remember, our bodies have a healthy weight and it’s not always thin-thin for some people. You’ll find out as you keep running. If losing that 24 lbs or so leaves you tired, grumpy, depressed, and not getting good workouts, you’ll know you’ve dropped a few too many. Besides, it looks like you have more muscle now than you used to and (you know this) muscle weighs more. Anyway – you’re beautiful so enjoy cake and ice cream now and then.

I can always say no to any food, but if I crave something it’s usually cheap chocolate and toffee/caramel aka Milk Duds, Rolos…. which is a little odd for someone who prefers to bake with quality ingredients.

I think it’s great you posted it on your blog.. will definitely help!! Everyone, or most everyone, struggles with weight at some point in their life. I think everyone can relate. And it sounds like you are already on a roll… you can do it! Just need to create some new habits :)

  16. February 6th, 2013 at 22:31 | #16

I think you look great, but I can relate to not quite feeling comfortable in your own skin! My biggest food drama is chips and salsa. I LOVE THEM! :)

Losing weight is never a fun subject. I love your honesty. I think you look amazing, but I completely understand the want to be a certain size. Tony is working on that right now and it’s a tough one especially when it comes to cutting out a glass of wine in the evening. Sounds like you’re doing well so far though. Congrats on the 9lbs! I know you’ll hit your target soon! You have the perfect drive for it!

  18. February 7th, 2013 at 14:03 | #18

I think you look great, Heather! I think that being as active as you are, training for marathons, it is hard to find the perfect balance. You have to fuel your body to run long miles and that balance is really tough to find.

I have faith in you – you can do this!

  19. February 8th, 2013 at 13:21 | #19

I LOVE your hair in that first picture! Yep, food is my nemesis too – thank god for working out so that I am able to maintain my weight, but that’s 30 to 40 pounds higher than I need to be (damn me for being short!). Keep the ice cream and cake. I’ll take bread, cheese, and artisan sausages, with pretzels on the side thank you very much.

Thank you, thank you for your kind words and email about our dog Ed – I appreciate it Heather!!

First- that cake looks amazing- BRAVO! Second- I get it… I’m a food freak too- I have this bottomless pit of a stomach and everyone just tells me- don’t eat some much and you’ll lose the weight, but my will power is never strong enough. I think you look amazing and strong! But good luck. 9 lbs in itself is a huge achievement. Congrats!
